Thomas Brooks, 1667

    Winslow, Mary-Some dying sayings

Octavius’s mother, Mary Forbes (1774–1854) had Scottish roots but was born and raised in Bermuda and was the only child of Dr. and Mrs George Forbes. On 6 September 1791, when she was just 17, she married Army Lieutenant Thomas Winslow of the 47th Regiment. Shortly after this, she came under spiritual convictions and was brought to gospel deliverance while pleading the promise, “Ask, and ye shall receive”.[citation needed]

Mary and Thomas Winslow went on to live in England and Octavius was born in Pentonville, a village near London, on 1 August 1808. He was the eighth of 13 children. Those children recorded in the family bible of Robert Winslow, brother of Octavius, are:

“It is one thing to talk of death: it is quite another thing, when it becomes a reality, to grapple with it.”

Piper, John Charles Spurgeon Preaching Through Adversity

You will face adversity. It’s only a matter of time. Likely you already have. How will you persevere through the oppressing moments of life?

But the question for pastors is even more difficult: How do you preach through adversity? How do you do heartwork when your heart is under siege and ready to fall? This is crucial. Preaching great and glorious truth, in an atmosphere that is not great and glorious, is an immense difficulty.

Drawing on the life and work of Charles Spurgeon, John Piper presents an inspiring vision of gospel ministry and offers practical counsel for how pastors keep going when the times are toughest-www.desiringgod.org
